Jesus Receipt

Jesus Receipt,A couple in South Carolina was surprised to find what they believe to be the face of Jesus on the receipt they received from a local Walmart store. Gentry Lee Simmons and Jacob Sutherland got the receipt after paying for the development of pictures at a Walmart in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. "When I returned, I asked the reception to the film on the kitchen counter and three days later we went to church as we usually do on the night of Wednesday," said Sutherland, as reported by the New York Daily News.
After returning from service in the church, the couple noticed that pious reception was discolored and saw an image they believe is Jesus of Nazareth.
"There are tons of people who will say, 'Oh, we are in the Bible belt," but my question to those who doubt, who else has the power to put their face on a receipt for checkout, but Jesus? "Asked Sutherland, quoted in the New York Daily News.
Walmart clerks have told the couple that the reception has been printed on thermal paper, which will discolor when exposed to heat.

Not everyone sees the face of Jesus in the reception. Some argue that the image of Osama bin Laden or Charles Manson.
The phenomenon of seeing faces in objects is known as "pareidolia," and includes things like see animals and faces in the clouds, or to see a man in the face of the moon. The Rorschach inkblot pareidolia used to better understand the psychological state of a person because they 'see' images in ink blots.
In the middle Ages, scholars called such events lusus naturae, or jokes of nature. They believed that nature was deliberately trying to deceive them by putting pictures of crosses and faces in natural objects. Many naturalists collected examples of objects that seem to have designs on them. With the rise of the modern scientific view, such collections have been relegated to sideshows circus.

Tainted trio’s preparatory

LONDON: The preparatory hearing of the spot-fixing case against Pakistan’s tainted trio would begin at the Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday (today), a spokesman at the Southwark Crown Court confirmed on Monday.

Justice Cook would conduct the hearing which will last for two days, the spokesman told ‘The News’, adding: “Since it is a multi-handler hearing, all three players have been asked to appear in person.”

Muhammad Asif’s lawyer Robert Binning confirmed that the fast bowler would be appearing before the court on Tuesday. Muhammad Amir is also expected to attend the hearing and so will agent Mazhar Majeed.

However, former captain, Salman Butt will be exempted from attending the hearing since he is unable to travel to London, ‘The News’ has learnt.

The spokesman said the proceedings related to an application to dismiss the case lodged by the defence. There will be arguments before the trial judge however the players would not be cross-examined at this stage.

During a hearing on May 20, Justice Saunders of the same court, approved the bails of the players, but directed that the accused must appear before the court in the end of July for a preparatory hearing.

The defence had argued that the court should consider exempting the players from the next appearance as it will only be a procedural hearing and matters related to the trials will be settled and no pleas will be entered.

However, the lawyer, representing the Crown Prosecution Service, argued that the three players should appear in person and “video link appearance from Pakistan should be ruled out as there were frequent power outages” in that country.

Asif, Amir and Butt are charged with conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments from a third party after News of The World newspaper unfolded the match-fixing scandal.

Their London-based agent, Majeed, is accused of accepting £150,000 to arrange for the players to bowl no-balls in Pakistanís Test match against England at Lord’s in August.

During the two-day hearing on Tuesday and Wednesday, it will be decided as to who will conduct the trial and where, what are the disclosures and who will form the defence team, lawyers said.

Asian shares down on US

HONG KONG: Asian stocks followed global markets downwards on Tuesday as the eurozone debt crisis rumbled on while lawmakers in Washington remained deadlocked on an agreement to avoid a US default.

As equities tumbled dealers moved into safer investments, with gold sitting at record highs.

Hong Kong fell 0.37 percent, Tokyo dropped 0.71 percent by the break, Shanghai lost 0.87 percent, Seoul dipped 0.11 percent and Taipei lost 0.21 percent. Sydney was flat.

The losses follow sell-offs in London's FTSE 100, which lost 1.55 percent, while Frankfurt's DAX also fell 1.55 percent and the Paris CAC 40 shed 2.04 percent to its lowest point of the year.

On Wall Street the Dow gave up 0.76 percent, the S&P 500 dropped 0.81 percent and the Nasdaq slid 0.89 percent.

European debt woes showed no sign of easing ahead of an emergency summit on Thursday aimed at thrashing out a second bailout for Greece that would help it avoid a default and prevent debt problems from spreading to other economies such as Italy and Spain.

Bond markets in peripheral European nations also tumbled.

The yield on Italian and Spanish bonds hit euro-era records, reflecting widespread concern that both countries were now at higher risk.

Italy's 10-year bond yields rose to above 6.0 percent Monday, compared with 5.75 percent on Friday, while Spain's rose from 6.05 percent to 6.30 percent.

In Italy -- seen with Spain as the next most at risk after Greece, Ireland and Portugal were bailed out -- the stock market slumped more than three percent, while Madrid was down 1.44 percent.

Investors are concerned about a possible financial crisis despite European Banking Authority stress tests Friday showing only eight out of 91 lenders failed.

Critics said the results did little to reassure since the reviews did not include a possible sovereign debt default -- the most crucial issue.

Adding to market pressure is the impasse in the United States where the White House and Republicans are running out of time to strike a deficit-cutting deal that will allow the debt ceiling to be raised and avoid default.

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said progress was being made but warned of the devastating consequences of failure.

A US debt default "would bring the world economy... because of the critical role we play in the global economy, to the edge of recession again. And again, it's not an option we can consider," he said.

Republicans, whose votes President Barack Obama needs to raise the limit, have demanded sweeping spending cuts in return while rejecting calls from the White House and Democrats to tie them to tax hikes on the rich and corporations.

The euro inched up to $1.4125 in Tokyo morning trading from $1.4117 in New York late Monday. The European single unit firmed to 111.68 yen from 111.50 yen. The dollar fetched 79.05 yen, little changed from 79.02 yen.

Gold opened at $1,602.00-$1,603.00 an ounce in Hong Kong, up from Monday's close of $1,598.00-$1,599.00.

The precious metal passed the $1,600 barrier in London on Monday as dealers bought it for its safe-haven status amid the uncertain global economic outlook.

In Sydney, Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation gained more than three percent despite a warning by Standard & Poor's that the company's credit rating could be cut.

The rise follow a more than four percent sell-off on Monday, a slump matched on US markets and heavy selling last week.

The media giant has been battered by the phone-hacking scandal surrounding Britain's now-defunct News of the World, which has seen the resignation of key Murdoch associates as well as the head of London's police commissioner.

New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate for delivery in August, gained 38 cents to $96.31 per barrel.

Brent North Sea crude for September added 41 cents to $116.46. (AFP)

Dollar edges down

TOKYO: The dollar eased against the euro in Asia on Tuesday, as concerns over a lack of progress in US debt negotiations outweighed worries over the eurozone's sovereign problems, dealers said.

The euro inched up to $1.4125 in Tokyo morning trading from $1.4117 in New York late Monday. The European single unit firmed to 111.68 yen from 111.50 yen.

The dollar fetched 79.05 yen, little changed from 79.02 yen.

Prospects remain unclear over the ongoing debate between Democrats and Republicans in Washington over raising the US government's debt ceiling.

The White House has warned that the debt limit must be raised by August 2 to prevent a default, which economists and business leaders warn would have deeply destabilising consequences for the global economy.

But Republicans, whose votes Obama needs to raise the congressionally set limit, have demanded sweeping spending cuts in return while rejecting calls from the White House and Democrats to tie them to tax hikes on the rich and corporations.

Rating agencies S&P and Moody's last week threatened a possibility of lowering their US debt ratings amid the political standoff.

Meanwhile, concern over the eurozone debt crisis continued to undermine investor sentiment, sending bond markets in peripheral nations lower and beating global stock markets overnight.

The persistent uncertainty also saw the yield, or rate of return, paid on Italian and Spanish bonds hit euro-era records, reflecting widespread concern that both countries were now at higher risk and could suffer contagion from the debt crisis.

Italy's 10-year bond yields rose to 6.0 percent Monday, compared to 5.75 percent on Friday, while Spain's rose from 6.05 percent to 6.30 percent.

"While the US debt dispute dragged on the dollar, concerns linger over the eurozone debt crisis even after the stress tests were conducted on Europe's banking system," said Gen Kawabe, dealer at Chuo Mitsui Trust and Banking.

"With sell factors for both the dollar and the euro, the market is closely watching the upcoming European summit meeting and developments for the US debt negotiations," Kawabe said.

Leaders of the eurozone countries are holding an emergency summit Thursday aimed at averting a default by Greece and preventing the debt contagion from spreading to larger economies such as Italy and Spain.

The yen showed little reaction after Japanese Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda said Tuesday recent movement in the currency market has been "one-sided".

"The caution over Japan's potential intervention doesn't seem strong in the market" as market participants are shifting their focus to the Greece debt woes, Daisuke Karakama, market economist at Mizuho Corporate Bank, told. (AFP)

Crude up in Asia

SINGAPORE: Oil markets rose in Asian trade Tuesday as traders snapped up cheap crude after European and US debt woes pulled prices down, analysts said.

New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) light sweet crude for delivery in August, gained 38 cents to $96.31 per barrel.

Brent North Sea crude for September delivery added 41 cents to $116.46.

"I think today is just pretty much a relief rally on the back of heavily sold oil prices yesterday," said Serene Lim, an oil and gas analyst for ANZ bank in Singapore.

Crude prices had slumped on Monday -- with WTI falling 1.35 percent -- as traders fretted over the US debt impasse and the state of Europe's economy as Greece risked defaulting on its debts.

Eurozone leaders were preparing for an emergency summit to be held on Thursday to explore methods of preventing a Greek default, which could have destabilising effects on larger European economies.

Meanwhile, US senators were struggling to bridge a deep partisan divide and forge a compromise deal to raise the federal government's debt ceiling by August 2 in order to avert a potentially disastrous default as well.

In the absence of significant developments on these fronts at the moment, crude traders were "still very much uncertain about the market", ANZ bank's Lim said. (AFP)
